Periodontal Treatment in Smyrna, TN

Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious oral health disorder that can result in the loss of teeth and has been linked to dangerous health risks such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and low birth weight babies. Periodontal disease begins when plaque (white film) and calculus are left to build upon the teeth and gums. If not removed, they can cause gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease. Some of the most common signs of periodontal disease are gums that are red, inflamed, and bleed easily. Also, the foul smell of gum disease can be very embarrassing. If someone is offering a mint or gum when you come around, it could be a sign. Healthy gums generally do not bleed. If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact our office immediately to receive the care you need and begin improving your oral health now.

At Next Level Dental, we provide several treatment options to halt the progression of gum disease and get you back to optimal oral health. Here are some of the treatment options available:

Laser-Assisted Periodontal Therapy (LAPT)

This is a very successful program that can actually reverse the damage of bone loss by using a diode laser to treat the infected gum tissue and stimulate the bone to regenerate. The treatment is done with the area numbed in conjunction with gum therapy and smoothing the tooth/root surfaces in the office, followed by anti-microbial rinses at home afterward. The recovery time is faster than traditional gum therapy and has little to no discomfort. Depending on how your body responds to the treatment, future cleaning frequencies may eventually be every 6 months (like healthy mouth cleanings) versus the norm of every 3-4 months, meaning you may have to come to the dentist/hygienist 3-4 times a year for the rest of your life.

Periodontal Therapy / Site Placed Antibiotic.

This treatment works well to reduce bacteria and stop the progression of the disease process. A local numbing agent is a place to make sure you are comfortable during the procedure. Along with the periodontal therapy (smoothing and detoxifying of the tooth roots), we will determine the deepest pocket depths around your teeth. At that time, a thorough lavage of the gum area is done to remove any dislodged material and bacteria. We will then place an antibiotic in the pockets that will stay around for at least 30 days to reduce the bacterial levels to promote healing.

You will be placed on a recall program to monitor your progress. The information that we receive for the next sessions will determine if any other treatment will be necessary. We are charged with keeping the remaining teeth in your mouth as healthy as possible. We also want you to have great overall health as well.

Traditional Periodontal Therapy (Root Detoxifying).

This therapy allows us to remove the large, bacteria-laden deposits adhered to the tooth root and crowns. We will numb up the areas to be treated and use hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers to remove the deposits. Use of antibacterial rinses will be prescribed, and the patient is placed on a 3-month recall for evaluation.
